Simple techniques for composing SMS text messages

At first glance, everything seems simple: throw in the text you need, add your contacts and send SMS messages throughout the database. But think about what exactly it takes to get the maximum response from your customers?

That's right: an effective and relevant text that will not only attract customers, but also bring in money.

How to compose an effective text for SMS messages to clients?

We have compiled our selection of tips and examples to make it easier for you to learn from other people's mistakes and avoid them in the future.

1. Write simply and clearly

Even a short text message can kill the whole messaging idea. Let's see an example of a mailing text , when they were too smart with him.

The last sentence is not only difficult to read, it is also difficult to understand. At best, this SMS will be left to be re-read until better times, at worst - immediately deleted.

2. Avoid obscure words

It is important that your text messages do not include slang, acronyms and obscure text abbreviations that make your brand less expensive and can ruin your campaign. The client can consider SMS spam and delete them without hesitation.

3. Leave contacts

The client should not search for your phones or email on the Internet if he has any questions or interest. Do not place high hopes on the Alpha name that it will tell users who you are and where to look for you.

Add city code numbers to SMS so that they work on click and the subscriber does not have to perform a bunch of unnecessary actions to contact you.

4. Personal correspondence - private messages

It is important to consider what kind of relationship your company has with the recipient. You can walk up to a stranger and say, “I bought this shirt, 50% off. Do you want one? " Even if you start a dialogue with familiar people, it is most likely with the word "Hello". So why do we immediately write on the forehead when we compose SMS?

As in the case with, the letter is most likely addressed to one person - the owner of the number, of course, if you are not left with corporate contacts.

To avoid backlash, try to establish a relationship with the recipient starting from the moment the customer bought something from you and gave you permission to send SMS. As an option:

“Hi Ivan, thanks for your purchase! We are looking forward to meeting you soon. Show SMS at the checkout and get 20% on your next purchase in Our Store, tel. + 380686868686 ".

5. A minimum of large letters

In SMS, there is no way to add color, change the font or style of text. Therefore, if you want to highlight something in capital letters, then it will be enough to add one or two words, but not stamp the entire SMS with Caps Lock.

6. Write in the client's language

It is very difficult to read the Latin alphabet, especially for those who know English and are trying to strain their brain and eyes so that this text is perceived in their native language.

For example, the letters "Y" and "J" in such messages are generally universal soldiers. They act as: w, y, i, y, e, b, and this is only in the examples that I managed to find. Such variations of the same letter are found even in the same message:

Bulk SMS will work well for attracting customers only if it is written in their language. It goes without saying that the Latin alphabet is cheaper, but don't skimp on symbols if you really care about your followers.

7. Segment the base

Perhaps some companies are planning that their customers receive absolutely all SMS messages and share them with their friends. But why not just segment the database and annoy you with unnecessary SMS?

I am very grateful for the concern that the administration of the clinic reminds me that it is time for me to get a lift and go to the proctologist, but I left my number for a completely different reason. Although the clinic felt that I was interested in everything.

When exporting contacts, add additional fields, specifying information in them that can be used for SMS. For example, for a veterinary clinic or pet store, you can divide customers into lovers: dogs, cats, turtles and elephants.

The more you know about the client, the easier it is to segment contacts for SMS mailing and send messages depending on their interests. Know who your target audience is and reach out to them directly.

8. Give a call to action

The text of the SMS mailing should interest the client and at the same time be laconic. There is no room for air and space like in email newsletters. Discard all extraneous details and simply describe your offer and why the client needs it.

Such a set of products is unlikely to be understood by customers if there is no clear call to action in them. What exactly should the client do: look for cheaper places, go and buy, wait for the price to fall?

To get the best response to your mailing list - write what you want from the client, adding a clear CTA. Make sure the SMS includes everything, including detailed instructions on what the client should do:

  • you need to call - give the number
  • go to the site - leave the site address,
  • write to you - give an email.

Just don't use two calls to action in one SMS message - this can confuse the reader.

9. Show the benefits

Nobody wants to receive SMS, being distracted by reading them and cluttering up the phone's memory, if there is no benefit in them.

Very strange wording of the message and it is not even clear why I need to go to this exhibition.

Add offers in real time, share information about a sale or a new product, describing the benefits in force now.

10. Talk about what the client needs

Build on your previous experience with a client and write about promotions and discounts that will be really interesting to people.

Send the right information to the right people and they are more likely to want to work with you.

11. Make the client feel special

Text messages can clutter up a reader's phone, but they will never use any of the suggestions. Give your customers a sense of uniqueness in the text and tell them about exclusive promotions. It makes them feel special and encourages them to stay with you so they don't miss out on great deals in the future.

Otherwise, they will most likely refuse to receive any texts from you.

12. Grab attention from the first word

For example, start a message with the word NEWS, NEW, Promotion, etc. That is, from what the reader would like to see and what can interest him in a text preview of the general list of messages. This increases the likelihood that your messages will be opened and read.

13. Keep your messages specific and short

The easier you make your messages, the more likely you are to be understood. Set yourself a limit, say 100 characters, and read the message back and forth until it meets your "standards". Learn to briefly fit the maximum of useful information into SMS without unnecessary details, conveying the essence of the action to the consumer.

Throw out all unnecessary words and see how your SMS looks like: are there any ambiguous words, difficult turns, accumulations of vowels, complex consonant combinations, etc.

14. Add your brand name

The alpha name YvesRocher may not tell the client anything, but the Russian Yves Rocher in the text, as it were, deciphers who is writing.

The reader already perceives the text as a whole and does not look at the name, who is writing to him.

15. Stick to a simple structure: benefit + CTA + contacts

The sum does not change from the permutation of the terms, so the order may be slightly different. Make the message meaningful so that the subscriber immediately understands the essence of the offer and can appreciate the benefits by making a purchase from you.

16. Let's get numbers

Such an SMS is very difficult to read and this is to blame for everything: the Latin alphabet, large letters and of course the text itself - while you read to the end, you already forget where it all started.

After all, it was possible to shorten the text and write clearly: "Hurry up, only until 14.04 leather jackets, fur coats and sheepskin coats from the new collection with a 50% discount." For example, as the company did 925.ua in SMS on Black Friday

17. Think about your target audience

Imagine the image of the person to whom you are sending SMS and adjust the text to this category of people. If you are sending SMS to students, it is quite appropriate to speak their language, but the same text for older people will no longer be acceptable.

18. Anticipate questions

Better yet, write so that no questions or doubts arise. Not everyone will search the Internet for additional information about your SMS. If the client does not immediately call to clarify the details, most likely, then he will completely forget about it. Imagine yourself as a client. What would you like to receive in SMS so that you understand what it is about?

19. Check your links

Several years ago, individual mobile phones began to display. These images are taken directly from the Open Graph tags affixed to the page that the post links to.

20. Test, repeat, speak your text

Mobile newsletters are no different from other customer marketing methods you use in your business. Always send a test message to multiple mobile phones with different screen sizes. This will give you a chance to see: how the letter is read, whether everything looks as you intended, compare the text with previous SMS-kami (if it is on a smartphone), etc.

Text messages are well received when they are short, simple, and personal. If what you want to say does not correspond to at least one of the three things, look for another way to say it or derive your own formula for effective SMS texts.

If you are not sure of yourself, contact us and we will discuss with you not only the text of the message, but also help you build your marketing strategy, protecting you from common mistakes and unnecessary waste;)

The client can be influenced in different ways: in a radio video, for example, add emotions in intonation, on the site, highlight the main font or insert a video. And in SMS - there is only text, and very short. To offer a product and push a customer to buy, you have 70 characters in Cyrillic or 160 in Latin.

In this article, we have collected 11 techniques that will help you compose an effective text for SMS mailing. The text that communicates the main sentence, tells the details and motivates the client to take action. And in the second part of the article there are examples for the holidays and other news stories. Ready? Let's start!

How to compose an effective SMS text message

1. Write the main information on the first two lines. Here's a sample message diagram to help you get things neat:

Or you can do this:

2. Indicate the name of the company at the beginning if SMS are sent from an unnamed number:

3. Add a time limit and to encourage the client to do what you want them to do.

4. Personalize SMS by substituting customer data. You can substitute the name of the client, his birthday, bonus card number and any other information.

SendPulse uses variables to personalize SMS messaging. For example, the variable ((name)) is the user's name. If you insert it into the text of the letter, the service will automatically substitute data from the column with this name in this place.

5. Replace blurry phrases with specific ones:

Make your dream come true → Order a sofa

Start saving → Save on shipping

6. You can shorten words if necessary. But abbreviations and abbreviations should be generally accepted and understandable so that the reader does not have to decipher the text:

Free Gift → Free Gift

Salary → salary

Birthday Gift → Gift for DR

7. Write short and to the point. SMS is not a literary genre, people do not expect beautiful phrases from text messages. It is better to replace long words with short ones, and instead of the metaphor “iron horse” write simply “machine”. Here's an example of how not to do it:

Let's try to write it in short:

A good example of SMS messaging

8. Capital letters - Use Caps Lock sparingly. On the Internet, capital letters are perceived as a cry, so it is better to highlight only the details:

9. Do not be familiar and do not "squint" for a friend. Such messages are often written by spammers:

10. Remove, where possible, modal verbs and linking words: "probably", "if", "therefore":

In the whole chain of stores → In the network of stores

You can order → Order

11. Indicate next to the date a landmark - the day of the week, if the number of characters allows:

People are often bad at dates: they forget about meetings and appointments. When preparing the text of SMS mailing to clients of a beauty salon or cafe, indicate "Friday" or "today" next to the date. This will make it easier for them to plan their time.

Examples of SMS mailings for popular news feeds

Now let's see how to apply the techniques of composing SMS in practice. Popular reasons for mailing are discounts, a new collection or store opening, a client's birthday and other holidays.

We hope this article will help you write vibrant messages that will increase your sales. SendPulse will help.

Information about new promotions, sales, product updates, gifts and discounts - all this can be contained in the sales letter. It helps to attract more new customers, strengthen relationships with old ones, and increase sales.

A regular customer can be immediately informed about loyalty programs, discounts and new products - he will forgive, understand and follow the link. But unlike him, a new subscriber is not a client yet. And he may never become one if he gets obsessive advertising right after the subscription.

Your task is not to scare away and anger the subscriber, but to earn his trust and arouse interest in the newsletter. To do this, start with a greeting and a content thread:

  • with interesting information;
  • useful tips;
  • games and tests in exchange for a gift or discount.

The blog of the Internet agency TexTerra contains a case study of the Aromatny Mir wine supermarket chain. The entire base was relatively cold, but the result was successful: the Open Rate was 28.4%, and the number of unsubscriptions was only 0.5%.

Welcome letter from the Aromatny Mir chain of stores

If the mailing began with an offer to buy a box of wine, there would be more unsubscriptions. At the initial stage, try to start a confidential conversation with the subscriber: tell about why you are making a newsletter, what will be in it. And let the reader decide for himself whether he needs it or not. This will give you an active and responsive base.

Continue your mailing list with interesting information, life hacks and other useful content until you see interest from the subscriber. It is expressed in clicks on links and catalog views. Have you noticed such activity - make up a commercial offer, spice it up with a special price, time limit and hit right on the target.

Maxim Ilyakhov, a well-known journalist, editor and creator of the Glavred service, in an article on the Medium blog platform:
- The best and first segmentation is the segmentation by engagement. If a person responds to your posts, give them 100% marketing. If it doesn't react - 30%.

Basic elements of a cold base sales letter

Before writing a sales letter for your newsletter, work through each element: subject, headline, text, call to action. Miss something, and the subscriber will not open the letter, and if they do, they will not go to the site.

Subject and pre-header (pre-header)

The SendPulse email marketing service has conducted a survey of 120 online store subscribers. Result: the majority of recipients (62%) open and read email only if it has an interesting topic.

The preheader, also known as the headline, complements the theme. These are the few words that you see in the email client to the right of the message subject. Often, without a preheader, the topic looks incomprehensible and needs to be continued.

Greeting

The heading is required rule does not apply to email newsletters. Often it is replaced by a subject, and the letter begins with the reader's name and a greeting. Email with a name better positions the subscriber and sets up a dialogue.

If you use only the name: make sure that it is spelled without errors and in the correct declension.

If using a header: compose it using the 4U method. It should be useful, unique, ultra-specific (contain numbers), and urgent (time-limited).

Example 4U header:

Slim waist in 2 months according to the program of Ekaterina Usmanova. When registering before December 10, the sports menu is free.

If the title is too long, the last parameter (urgency) can be removed.

Text

Selling text for a cold base that you want to read to the end looks like this:

  • it is informative and not loaded with unnecessary details;
  • fits the topic;
  • easy to read;
  • well structured (there are subheadings, lists, highlighted blocks);
  • does not contain incomprehensible abbreviations and terms;
  • not overloaded with images - one image is enough.

It is necessary that the reader from the first seconds understand what exactly you are offering him, why he needs it, and how he can get it. If he is distracted by bright pictures, slogans and abstract wording, he will close the letter, and next time he will need to work hard to generate interest in the mailing list.

Let's take as a sample a sales letter for sending an email from the Internet accounting department "My Business":

  1. They talked about WHAT they offer: a cycle of webinars;
  2. told WHY to watch the webinar: there is a program;
  3. showed HOW to register - placed a clear CTA button.

At the bottom of the letter - additional information, links to social networks, contacts, an unsubscribe button.

Call to action button

This is the main element of a sales letter. Bright theme, headline, text, cool design - all this for the user to become interested and go to the site / place an order / register.

The call-to-action button should be clear, contrasting, with a short and motivating phrase.

Example:

  • "Pick up a free coupon";
  • "Choose stockings for the promotion";
  • "Buy grape seedlings with a 20% discount";
  • Purchase 14 Demo Lessons;
  • "Download the book in one click."

To get the reader to see the button immediately, place it at the top of the page. If the email is long, there may be 2-3 such buttons, but don't overdo it.

Sales newsletter emails: email examples for new subscribers

We have compiled 3 examples of cold base sales emails that are sent after the content chain and announcement:

Selling email with an offer to sign up and pay for training on food freezing. Initially, the messages were informational: ready-made menu options, recipes and useful tips for housewives.

Newsletter of the online cosmetics store M A C

M A C offers free shipping with a promotional code. Valid for 1 day - great motivation to make a purchase quickly. There was no content mailing, they immediately sent interesting, bright letters, introduced them to the assortment. If a store is well known, it can do without a newsletter.

New subscribers and those to whom you have not written for a long time is a minefield. Follow it carefully: send welcome emails, then content emails, and only after that - advertising emails. And when you receive orders from the site, you can record them in: the program itself will appoint a responsible manager, set him the task of contacting the client and will give tips at each stage of the sales funnel.

Many entrepreneurs intuitively or quite consciously understand the prospects that a mass SMS mailing opens up for them. True, the lack of experience or the necessary personnel in the state can play a cruel joke, but we have already written about how not to get stuck on trifles. You can familiarize yourself with the main factors that can cause negative customer feedback, and therefore avoid them.

Now let's talk in more detail about the texts of SMS-mailings to clients. We, again, wrote about, but one thing is theoretical knowledge, it is quite another to see them in practice. Let's take a look at the texts for stores, that is, for everyone who sells goods.

Just in case, let us make a reservation that your notification to the client must contain information that is interesting and valuable to him. Therefore, before you start creating an SMS mailing list, formulate your proposal clearly and understandably for yourself. If you find that it will be useful to the subscriber, start composing the message.

Here is one of the examples of SMS mailing of a clothing and footwear store (I will not disclose the name):

"Coldly? In "XXX" up to -50% on clothes and footwear from 25.11.Details: 050ххххххх "

  • First phrase hits directly on the target (given that it is the end of November outside the window).
  • -50% - also good. The concrete figure is all the more impressive. The only thing is that without knowing the initial price (or average store prices), we don't know what to expect. The discounted price may be UAH 1,000, or maybe 10,000. As you understand, the level of income of different people may differ significantly. If we had indicated the price from ... in the message, we would probably have attracted the target audience as close as possible to us. Please note if you are going to send messages to a fresh subscriber base.
  • From 25.11 - Dates are best used to limit the term of the proposal. Otherwise, the subscriber will not be in a hurry. Either write from 25 to 30.11, or just the deadline.
  • Details - use a link to the site, or a phone number, as here, and ideally - free for the subscriber.

a few more options for the text of SMS mailing for (online) stores. Examples:

Total sale! Until 6.12. All coats for 2111 UAH.
Address: xxx
Link.

Sensational discount -15% for everything! Tilki until 1.12. Telephone.

6.12 buy any 3 goods and choose a gift of your choice. Details of the action: link to the site.

Furniture salon "XXX" gives discounts up to 40%. Manage to use it before 1.12. Pleasant surprises and good mood are guaranteed!
